Dorothy Waide, Karitane Nurse, is often labelled as a ‘baby whisperer’ or ‘baby guru’. Over the last twenty years these names have followed her around the world as she has supported many young families with her practical help and sound advice on caring for newborn babies and toddlers.
Dorothy gained her reputation as a natural baby whisperer for her uncanny ability to calm even the most fractious, crying baby or child. She was even nicknamed ‘Mary Poppins’ by celebrity mums for her miraculous touch and invaluable advice.
Not everyone likes labels, however, Dorothy has grown to understand that grateful parents, who are overjoyed with the professional support and advice she provides, use them to try to define Dorothy’s indescribable and seemingly magical gift with newborn babies and toddlers alike.
Dorothy shares her title with other professionals worldwide. Baby whisperer is a term often given to anyone who can bring immediate calm into a home where there is a distressed baby. It’s an instant ability to pacify an apparently inconsolable baby.
Dorothy’s passion for parents with newborn babies and toddlers is practically unlimited. As a baby whisperer, Dorothy takes a holistic approach to her work that takes into consideration all aspects of the family’s needs, their environment and lifestyle.
Dorothy recognizes that in today’s society we have lost the traditional ways of passing down the fundamentals of ‘mother craft’. Dorothy, with her natural, baby whisperer ways, reintroduces this important process to her families.
Dorothy qualified in 1973 as a Karitane Nurse. Since 1990, she has been based overseas in the USA, UK, Asia and Australia. Her passion as a dedicated post partum care provider has earned her a worldwide reputation and her ‘baby whisperer’ title.
This Karitane Nurse has shared the homes of the rich and famous including Hollywood royalty, down-under A-list actors and leading business people.
Although she continues to offer support and advice to families around the world by phone and internet, Dorothy has now returned home to New Zealand to share her wealth of knowledge and experience in the homes of families here.

“I firmly believe that there is no right or wrong way of dealing with a baby - there are easy and hard ways.
It is important to nurture our babies from day one. This does not result in spoiling them as some might say.
As a Karitane Nurse and now baby whisperer, I always aim to provide realistic advice.
Sleep is just as important a nutrient as food and babies need both to grow into healthy stable children.
I also aim to support and guide mothers through the conflicting advice on how to care for their new babies in those first months and to give them the encouragement to believe in themselves as parents.
The best mums are happy mums which in turn leads to positive parenting experiences and cherished memories for the whole family.”
